Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Default Key in ignition chime

I have a 01 Escape that the chime sounds as soon as the key is put in the ignition with the doors closed. The chime stops if you open the door. This is backwards from the way it is supposed to work.

The chime also sound with the key in the ACC position with the doors closed. I cant even listen to the radio with the engine off and the doos closed.

Yesterday, my FEH started to chime when I took the key out and open the drivers door. It stops when I close the door. I looked in the '05 repair manual and it had the description of my problem, but I didn't see the problem you described with your '01 Escape. The possible sources of my problem say:

1. Circuitry
2. Key-in-ignition warning switch (part of the ignition switch)
3. Instrument cluster
4. SJB

There are 5 test listed for my problem and here are things I'd check for in your '01:

Any blown fuses that would cause an open circuit when the key is in or on.

Ignition switch is bad

SJB is bad

Loose or corroded connector

Grounding problem

As you can see the problem could be any number of things and hopefully someone here has had the same problem repaired. The pin point test the techs do will narrow down the problem by checking the ignition switch, Smart Junction Box (SJB) and instrument cluster. You can check the fuses and check connections.

Good Luck
