Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Default 2008 Escape - RUST!

Hello forum, I recently purchased a 2008 Escape because I needed cheap, reliable 4x4 service that would be under warranty for the next few years. Soon after the purchase I noticed there was a rusty bolt located at the top of the sill of the hatchback. While in for unrelated service at the dealer they fixed that for me.

Since then (I've had the Escape for 3 months now) I've noticed both rear brake housings are rusted, as is the entire length of the driveshaft. Is this at all normal?!? I traded my 2000 Jetta for this SUV and it had less rust after 7 years.

Other than this issue, I'm quite happy with the Escape. Would love to hear from other Escape/Ford owners...thanks!

Best,
C4talyst

The rusty bolt would've p'd me off, but rust on the brake drums and driveshaft is normal. It doesn't hurt anything. Now if someone could explain why they're drum brakes...

My '06 has disk brakes front & back. Why would '08 go backwards - or is it an option?

For 08, only the hybrid has disk brakes. Don't know why they use two systems...

Quite simple. Ford wanted to save some money and putting cheeper drum breaks under the guise of they are not as noisy. That is why I got a used 06 rather than getting the 08.

Will have to see if the 09 have gone back to all disk breaks.

Four wheel disc is the way to go! Much easier to work on than drums, and they stop the vehicle WAY better than the disc/drum mix.
