Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Default Side steps for Escape Hybrid?

I'm considering installing side step bars on my 2007 FEH as my wife finds it a bit of a climb, especially when trying to avoid muddy side panels. I have two concerns:

1 - Is there anything unique about the FEH that will interfere with side steps designed for a non-hybrid Escape? (I'm looking at Westin and they say they will work without drilling).

2 - Will the side steps cause enough turbulence to noticeably decrease my mileage?

Anyone with relevant experience?

From what I've heard, the bolts holes that the side steps use for mounting are the same that secure the High Voltage cables on the '07 and prior FEH/MMH models. The concern is a side impact that would possibly drive the side step into damage to the cables and electrical injury.

The weight of the side steps is a small issue, but the wind drag would be more of a concern to me as far as mileage. I own a '05 FWD FEH and a new '09 FWD FEH Limited that is fully loaded except for the side steps. My concerns with the side steps was MPG and the fact that there is only a few inches below getting in and are not used as steps to get in.

Nice mud flaps would be cheaper IMO and there is a new rear tire spoiler for the '09 that increases MPG you may want to consider mounting.

My 2008 FEH FWD came with 2 options: "side steps" and "engine block heater". I have also put in the black rubber mats and the rear cargo shade. Can't say whether this affects MPG and as I didn't install them I can't speak to whether there are any issues related to installing these on a FEH. My wife and mother-in-law are both shorter women and it does help them get in and avoid some of the mud and snow. I find it handy for knocking mud and snow off before I get in.

Am considering adding some mud flaps and maybe a bug deflector. Would be interested in anybody's feedback on these two options also.

Thanks,
Bruce
