Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Default '04 Escape Racing Idle Issue

A while back my engine raced up to 3500rpm and wouldn't come down. Brought it to the dealer and they replaced the ICM(idle control motor). This solved the problem for a while. I have to go and clean out the ICM from time to time to keep it working (almost) properly. Is there something else that can be causing a racing idle besides the ICM?

Clogged fuel injectors, Throtle postioning sensor, oxygen intake valve, mass airflow sensor, among a few things it could be......

another issue that i remember was that on these vehicles with a v6, there is i believe a safety recall for the throttle cable. check on ford's web site with your vin and you will be able to tell if it is involved.

I agree with crazyuke there is a recall on the throttle cable for the 2001 to 2004 (i believe ) if it has not been replaced then it needs to be, if your not sure, either call the ford dealership with your vin or look under the lip of the hood and it should say on the sticker what has been completed i.e. "throttle cable replaced", "pcm recalibrated".

It could be all of these. First figure out if it's eletronical or mechical problem.

The IAC is the only thing that controls idle speed.

A clogged injector would cause a lean or rich issue.

Throttle position or mass air sensor, same failure. Vacuum leaks cause lean failure.

Someone will have to explain what a "oxygen intake valve" is. Never heard of it on a Ford.
