Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Default When to change spark plugs?

I have never had the sparkplugs changed on my 2001 Escape XLT 4WD, does anyone know or have an opinion on when they should get changed?

Have 36K miles on it and run with 87 octane regular gas.

How often should they be checked for gap?

I think 100,000 miles they last. However I have never seen these plugs last longer than 95,000 miles with out throwing misfire codes.

You never need to check for gap.

Default spark plugs

You should change your spark plugs around 100,000 miles. They run a dual platinum plugs witch you can get an easy 130,000 miles out of. Unless you do a lot of idling then I would agree with the other guy that said 95,000 miles or a bit less.

Yes it is ! That is why they have platinum plugs.

Be careful when you put it back together. This is a common place for a vacuum leak which will make your car run very poorly.

yea, you have to take the top end off. It is a pain, but the service manual will walk you through it, once you do that a couple of times it gets easier.
