Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Question Winter Tires

I just bought a Escape 2009 Limited.

I need to buy winter tires. Can I get standard rims for the tires.
Or I need to get a special rim because of the TPMS??

I have 17 in tires... but the winter I would go with 16 in tires.

Thanks

Helder

I'm not 100% certain, but I believe you will have a warning light if you install rims without TPMS.

Good news is that the sensors are already showing up on eBay. A set of 4 for about $50. Not too bad.

For winter tires, you might even want to go to a 15" rim. Just remember to increase the aspect ratio (what is it on the 17" rims ?)

On the model I will be receiving on next Monday it will be 17" chrome clad rims
Are you sure I can go with 15" rims??

Original is 16" 235/70 R16
The Chrome Clad is 225/65 R17

So 15" would be 255/70 R15????? It looks strange!

Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels will sell you a rim and tire combo for the winter, you can even get plain steel rims.

It doesnt matter with the TPMS on rims cause the TPMS is part of the valve stem. You can run with out it but you will get an error code.

Default Try all terrain instead

Take full advantage of your SUV, maybe you don't need to do the winter/summer tire swaps anymore.

I've been using all terrain tires and I'm much more confident in them for all year driving than the old highway all seasons. I think you should look around for yourself and decide but I'm going to get a full set of Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor tires. The Fortera Triple Tred looks quite good too, I like the unidirectional look but it doesn't look as aggressive as the Wrangler.

The problem is... that I live in Quebec... and there is a new law
that from December 15th to March 15th... Everyone needs to have Winter tires.

Yes, and I think that is a good law for Quebec ! I would like to see it go "coast-to-coast" up there.

I have seen (admittedly, not the most scientific) test results comparing AWD/4WD vehicles with "All Season" or "Mud & Sow" tires versus similar vehicles with true "Winter" tires. Stopping distances and maneuvering on snow and hard pack were much better with Winter tires.

You would be wasting money changing the rims, leave the stock rims the way they are, if your intention is to have smaller circumference tires then just purchase tires with a smaller sidewall height, if your just looking for best performance in snow covered roads, then a smaller circumference tire isnt going to help its just going to throw off your speedometer. I recommend going to a narrower tire it will give you better snow performance and will not affect your speedometer.
