Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Default Looking for some advice!

Hello all.
I've recently been in the market for a used car. I had a dodge 1998 neon but some guy in a 2008 silverado totalled it though, hence, no more neon.
So I got a settlement check for it, about 3 grand worth, and I've just been shopping around for some stuff.

I currently don't have much money to put toward that so I've just been looking. I really would LOVE to have a ford escape, and I came across one that caught my attention until I looked at the mileage.
this is a 2001 Ford Escape XLT and the mileage is about 168k, which I know is REALLY high.

The price is fairly decent though. It's at a dealership near my town, and they're asking $3450 or best offer. I would naturally offer lower because of the mileage, but I was wondering what your guys' take was on it. I've asked a mechanic what he though about about it, and he said that the Escapes don't normally need much work and even at that mileage should last me for a while. Obviously there are some here or there, but he said that he would rather see me go with an Escape before I went back to a neon.

I'm just a college student, and I don't drive vigourously everyday and I live close to my college. When I got my neon, it had about 102k on it and when it got totalled it had about 108k. I had owned it a little less than a year, so that kinda averages out to about 6k a year, give or take. So if I did get this vehicle, I wouldn't be adding much mileage to the vehicle.

So what are your opinions? If I do go for it, what should I look for in terms of a turn off?

I really really would like to have an escape, but I'm worried about the mileage.
any opinion helps!
