Question Cylinder misfiring

Hi folks,

Have a 2008 Escape 4 cyl. and the #1 cylinder is not working.
Confirmed that the plug and coil are good and that the engine computer is also feeding the correct voltage to the coil connector.

Can a malfunctioning sensor be the cause of this, like the crankshaft or the MAF sensor or maybe another sensor?????

Oh yeah injector has also been checked, but to my opinion, I could be wrong, the injector doesn't have to be working for the sparkplug to spark right????

Did a test with all the other 3 coil and plugs one at the time out of the cylinder on top of the engine and cranked the engine and the spark was clearly visible on all of them except Cyl. #1 even after switching a working coil and plug to this cylinder.

Please your guys knowledge.

You need fuel, ignition, air and compression for a cylinder to fire. It seems you've checked the first two. The next step would be a compression check. Pull the fuse on the fuel pump, start or attempt to start the engine and let it use up any remaining fuel and die. Then remove all four plugs and maybe disconnect the coil so you don't accidentally get a surprise. Then crank the engine checking and recording compression psi across all four cylinders. These readings should be within a few lbs. of each other. I suspect your #1 cylinder will be very low, indicating a cracked compression ring or burnt valve. You can tell which by squirting a little WD-40 in the cylinder and checking the compression psi again. If it’s a cracked ring, the oil ring will increase the psi temporarily, if not, it’s a burnt valve.

Ray claims no spark on #1 cylinder even with switching plugs and coils! Doesn't make any sense!

Wiring harness issue! ?

I'm thinking it could also be...
Bad PCM
Bad ground.

Is there an ignition control module?

Thanks for the replies guys.

My concern is why does this coil and plug not firing when it's out of the cylinder with a good ground when cranking the engine like the other 3 cylinder does with the same test.

With the other 3 cylinders the firing spark is clearly visible when cranking the engine.

To mine opinion, I need to see this coil and plug sparking and then go from there if the cylinder stays dead.

Coil and plug are good because they have been tested in another cylinder.
A brandnew wiring harness has also been installed, with same result.

Tested engine computer by doing the following test: with an av-meter and the ignition on placed one lead to the negative of the battery and other lead to one wire of the coil connector, there was power. Swithched then the lead to the positive battery pole and the other lead to the other wire of the coil connector and let someone cranked the engine and here there was also power, so to mine opinion the engine computer is doing it's job.

Please let me know what you guys think.

I want to see the plug sparking outside the cylinder like the other 3 cylinders that I did the same test with.

You need to use something that will put a load on the wires instead of the av-meter.

The harness to #1 cylinder, no matter what sparkplug/COP is used never sparks, correct? It's the harness or PCM and your test method is invalid.

Have you ever shorted the COP output directly to ground? That will take the driver out in the PCM. I have a COP tester which can safely do that for a cylinder balance test.

Heard that there was a call in by FORD for coil issues for the Escape's; anyone aware of this????
