Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Unhappy HELP!!!! Bad Squeal and Car keeps stalling

Hello All!
Someone please help me! I beg of you! I have a 2001 Ford Escape with a V-6 with 115,000. It has been great since the day I bought it new! But today out of the blue (The wife was driving it) I stalling at a major intersection and would not restart. I got there and finally got it to start. It had a very LOUD squeal! Like a bad alternator (the noise is in the same area (Around there) but it sounds like it might be behind the timing cover. The car keeps stalling out and is very hard to restart. Any Ideas what might be wrong? Thanks Soooo very much for any help!

Your compressor may have seized. Turn A/C off and retry.

You could also remove the belt and retry. That would also give you the opportunity to check pulleys and idlers. They should all be able to be turned by hand.

Unhappy

Hey Electro,
Thanks for the reply! I have pulled the belt off the Escape and the noise is still there. (sound like it is coming from under/behind the Valve/timing belt cover) Looks like I have to take the plenum/intake manifold off to get the valve cover off. Then I can pull the timing cover off. Any other Ideas about what the noise might be? Thanks SOOOOO Much!

You have 2 belts right? Maybe 1 belt is still on.

01 Escape V6.
I haven't had the pleasure of peaking into the timing cover on one of those, but I believe this is an timing chain not a timing belt.....
