A few days ago my 2001 Ford Escape powered driver's seat stop adjusting forward and backwards. It would only move the track on the left side and the right did not move at all. The up and down control worked fine, so at least I could still drive sitting in it comfortably switching off with my short wife who needed to be up close to the steering wheel. Well after searching the internet to see what replacement motors would costs ($200-400), I was even more determined in fixing this myself.
Today the wife said leave it alone just as I took out the socket set to unbolt the seat from the floor so I could at least get a better view of how the power seat was working or not working. Looking at the front motor it had a cable that in a black tubalar sleeve but the end looked like it was broken off. After some more looks at this I realized the broken end was just squared off and that the greasy end just needed to go back into a slot where it was supposed to turn the gears to move the seat on the track.
I was shocked into a surprise that the short cable made the dead track move again! Soooooooooo problem solved with just a reattachement of the cable back into the slot for turning the track gearing.
I think a service manual would have gotten me to this point much faster so it's off to the public library to borrow it for a few days.
Glad I didn't have to take it to the dealer, I'm not sure if that would have turned out cheaply as the last dealer visit cost me $850 for a new fuel pump and sending unit after they had it for 7 days.
