Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Default Towing concerns

I own a 2007 Ford Escape with a 4-cylinder engine. The owner's manual lists a 1,500 pound dry weight towing capacity. I am considering buying a popup camper with a dry weight of 1,075. Is my Escape capable of towing this camper safely and without damage to the engine or transmission?

You should be fine. Check and top off all fluids. MAKE SURE ALL LIGHTS ON TRAILER WORK CORRECTLY !! And the most important thing to remember is "TAKE YOUR TIME" You are pulling a trailer to go relax, not compete in the Indy 500 ! GOOD LUCK

Does anyone know the GVWR for a 1979 Econoline 150 conversion van?
It does have a trailer hitch and a 7 point pin connector.
Checking if it has an owners manual and if there is a tranny cooler.

I want to pull a 24 foot trailer weighing 4200 lbs dry.

Thanks
JW

If it has the factory transmission cooler, it probably has the full factory installed trailer tow option. It should be able to handle 5,000 lbs easily.

Back in the day when that was built, I think the ford van was THE towing vehicle, and the surburban was the only competitor. Pick ups of the same weight class did not compete, but I am thinking that 5,000 lbs was the towing capacity limit, and that is on a standard van, not a conversion van. Whatever extra weight that was added in converting it, would have to be subtracted from its towing capacity.

You may want to put your van on a scale and compare that to its listed curb weight, to determine how much towing residual you have. Be sure to deduct passenger weights, and any additional gear you plan to pull/ carry.

When at all possible you want to pull the trailer with empty tanks, consider that 40 gallons of water weighs approx 400 pounds.

You may want to consider that your van's curb weight is calculated with all fluids full so to add carrying capacity, run with half a tank that should give you an extra 70 pounds or so.
