Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Default Intermittant transmission problem/flashing traction control light

On two occasions I've had the following happen:
1. The transmission disengages.
2. The traction control light on the dash flashes.
3. The traction control light goes off.
4. The transmission re-engages and the car jerks back into gear.

As I recall, in both cases I was making a sharp right hand turn. I have a 2008 Limited with approximately 33K miles (I did get the extended warranty). Because its not reproducible I was advised to keep driving it and if it happened during business hours to bring it back to the dealer without turning it off and see if the diagnostic computer recorded anything. I know there's another generic "transmission problem" thread, but I wanted to get specific since that thread contains a myriad of different problems. Overall I'm really pleased with the car. I'd feel better if I had more of an idea with what's going on with this.

Never heard of this before but it sounds like the TC is detecting equal slippage at all wheels but I'd think that's impossible. Any blinking icon is bad and means a system problem.

Not sure if that system retains info in the freeze frame data like other DTCs.

Thanks. The dealer told me not to turn the car off because that wipes the computer's memory. I guess I'm just in a holding pattern waiting for it to happen again. It's not like it happens frequently. It was roughly 3 months between incidents. If I get a diagnosis I'll post an update.

Hey, I wanted to chime in on this one. I have a 2008 Escape also and it's done that exact same thing twice in the last two months. No problems with it to date, this is something new.

My issue sounds the same as what you experienced. Normally when accellerating and turning at the same time, I would get some loud grinding from the front of vehicle and my power would drop, then it would click into gear and all would be fine. The traction control light would flash when this was happening.

I wanted to touch base with someone else in case this turns into an issue we have to confront Ford over.
