Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Unhappy 2001 4-cyl escape starts when it wants!!

Hi all, i have a 2001 ford esapce 2wd 2.0 4 cyl. I am having trouble getting it started. I can go out in the morning and it will start, i go to work and when its time to leave which is about 2:30 in the afternoon it will not start. When it has its little spurts like this i just wait about 20 minutes then try to start it again. most of the time it fires right up. Once it has started i have no problems although this morning my check engine light came on. Does anyone have any suggestions where to start?? i would greatly appreciate your info.

Most large auto parts store will extract the Diagnostic Trouble Codes for free. Report the exact codes back here.

Possible but not likely.

The Powertrain Control Module (computer) is the thing that turns on the Check Engine Light and stores the Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

Make sure that PCM is working right too. The PCM in my Escape died wreaked havoc on my engine screwing up sensors and almost my Cat. It wouldn't register misfires, and wouldn't send the right codes.

thank you so much for the info. i changed the crankshaft position sensor and the car is working like a charm!! the old sensor was soaked in oil. i probably could get away with just cleaning the old one but what the heck.
