Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

I get it.. Because they intend to throw that filter away in a few months..

I don't want to use a Fram filter on my Escape,

Since it does not seem to come with the 2 O-Rings..

The 2009 Escape uses both the cartridge and the spin on oil filter. The cumbersome and very messy cartridge type was put on motors up until November 2008. Ford realized they had a problem on their hands (improperly installed O Ring seals causing oil leaks) so cars built after December ’08 come with the much more practical spin on. As I will do, you can order part #1L526881A aluminum housing, and #1S726840AA gasket to convert your old cartridge filter over to the spin on type. Bolts are the same, as are the oil sending unit. I have yet to do this, and will update this post when I do. It appears to be a slam dunk and hey, it can’t be any harder than changing that ridiculous cartridge.

Default ridiculous cartridge?

I've not changed my oil yet, but it seems like you can actually drain the filter,
by removing the drain bolt on the bottom.

Once it's drained, there should be minimum spillage when you unscrew the plastic filter housing.
(Unlike the completely full tin-can filter).
Dumping the filter element out in a plastic bag shouldn't be too hard.
Reinstalling the housing with new filter and O-rings shouldn't be much
of a technical challenge..

So, why is it ridiculous , I don't understand.?.

changed my oil on 09 2.3 L 4 cyc wuth the "cartridge". Have 5 cars and change oil on all of them. IMHO the cartridge type is very easy. Has a drain plug to dump oil first, filter base comes off with a standard 'socket" type oil filter wrench you get for $2 at any auto parts store. New filter comes with new "O" rings for cartridge and drain plug.

New "Motorcraft" filter at Walmart is under $3. part # FL-2017B
