Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Actually checked at fillup or from the onboard vehicle calculations?

Both. On Thursday I have to travel out of town. I'll detail my trip and you can decide.

I drove from Lubbock to Levelland, TX and back this morning. It is mostly highway, but returning to Lubbock I had to stop at six traffic lights. I got 32 mpg driving 60 miles per hour with the air conditioning on.

The starting receipt, on the right, is almost all city driving. The second receipt, on the left, is almost all highway driving. I think if I can drive farther and catch a gas station closer to the highway, I could exceed 33 mpg.

My message center shows close to 30MPG while at 60MPH. If hop on a highway right away and hop off for two gallons of gas like you did, I could get high MPG also.

Your city driving driving may not be like everybody elses city driving. If I make a ten mile round trip every day, can I expect to get 21MPG? I think not!

I was asked what my best MPG was on the hwy. I drove for more than 60 miles, more than an hour, and measured my mileage as accurately as I could. I even used the same gas station and the same gas pump so that the measurement of fuel would be as exact as possible. Keep in mind that when I reentered town I had to stop for six traffic lights. As I have stated, I was driving 60 mph most of the way with the air conditioning on. If I increase my speed to 70, the mpg will drop to 29. Certainly this is not unbelievable or unusual. I would think that if I had the opportunity to take a longer trip, under the same conditions, the mileage would be similar, or even better.

My city mileage ranges from 19 to 21. I have a very short commute work, one mile. I go to the bank at least once per day. I usually drive to lunch every day. About once a week I travel about 10 miles to the other side of town to run errands. This seems like typical city driving to me. The only hyper mileing technique I use during city driving is that I turn off the engine instead of idling, whenever the opportunity arises.

I might be traveling to Austin or Dallas next month. I'll track my mileage and report back here.
