2009 Automatic shifter needs lights (Corrected) My 2009 Escape Limited is a much improved vehicle from my 2008 (totalled in an accident, we were basically unscathed) and my still on the road 2001.
The driving experience shows a lot of little improvements likely due to many focus group discussions.
Things just seem to work better and more logically.
Except for one thing.
There are no lights on the automatic shifter console.
This leads to occasional confusion as to which gear, or neutral, the car is in on dark nights.
There is no dashboard indication of gear selection either.
I think this is a potential safety oversight on Ford's part.

Thanks to Escape_Fan.
I went out last night to look at my "problem" in the rural darkness and found the basis of it.
When I dim the dashboard lights, the lights on the console, being dimmer to start with, virtually disappear.
So it's pilot error in this case, not a design problem.
However this brings up another observation that all the fancy buttons lit up on the dashboard controls at night are distracting and require, in my case, that I dim them to the point that the console lights disappear.
In an urban setting with street lights etc. this is not necessary but away from external lighting, on an unlit country road or highway, dimming the dashboard is most necessary to avoid interior glare.
I still love my vehicle.
Best regards to everyone.
