Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Question Need help from manual transmission owners

Hi all ~

First post here. I have a 2009 Tribute with the manual transmission. There is a new noise that I believe is coming from the transmission. At highway speeds (~50 mph +) and in 4th or 5th gear, there is a distinct "whine" noise when on the throttle. When I let off the gas, the noise goes away, but as soon as I give the engine a little gas, the noise comes right back. Only does it in gear with clutch engaged and under throttle. Sounds like a bearing squeeking and started doing this around 2,000 miles. The car is under full warranty, but before I take it into the dealer for this mystery noise, I am hoping some folks here with the manual tranny (preferrably a 2009 model) could check to see if they are picking up the same noise.

To check, go down the road around 50 mph or so in 4th or 5th gear (windows up and radio off) and listen for a change in noise from when you have your foot on the gas pedal vs. taking it off the gas pedal. It will sound like a soft whine noise when you're on the gas and will go away when you let off the gas. If you could check this out and let me know what you find, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for helping me troubleshoot this before taking it into the dealer.

That sounds strange, but not as strange as the one that's making a sound like
a hard-disk drive under the passenger side of the dash.

Good luck finding anyone who drives a standard shift these days.
I just got my first AT since 1973. I must say, I like the new Escape 6 speed AT.
Still getting used to not shifting..

I had a 2006 AWD with 5-manual and it did kinda "whine" on the highway. I just figured it was gear noise (and or tire noise) when under load. If it's not REALLY loud and the car is running ok otherwise, then I would put it under the normal category.

On my 2006, it was really quiet for about 1-2k miles then became a little louder...maybe that is why you are concerned?
