Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Was it the procedure you were looking for?
I only glanced at the pictures and it sure looked a tad complicated for a spark plug change.

It seems a bit tedious but someone who did it said it was more time-consuming than difficult. That is was you get with an engine installed sideways and tilted to the back.

I have an 05 Escape w/99,000 miles on it, with the original plugs. I asked my local Ford dealer when they should be replaced, and he told me if the car is running well (which it is), to leave the plugs alone. When I was growing up, I read that plugs needed to be changed every 30,000 or so miles.

What is the currrent conventional wisdom on this? Thx.

If you have the original manual with the service schedule, it should tell you the recommended interval (sorry, I don't have mine any more). Typically with most Fords these days, they have platinum plugs with coil-over type coils. (According to the previously posted article, this one does as well) These plugs are usually good for at least 100,000 miles.

The problem that you will probably start to have is an intermittent coil going bad resulting in an intermittent miss - especially when you start messing with them. They tend to get brittle with age so I would recommend being very gentle with them when changing the plugs .

I would change them when performance or mileage drop off if they are worn more than .010" over the maximum gap setting. The front plugs are very easy to remove.

I have an 02 Escape with 3.0 V6, I just finished replacing all 6 plugs I did the procedure as it was shown in the link. The Escape had 69K on it, looked like original plugs, they were worn to about 0.060 gap [ new spec 0.052] the wider the gap the more likely the coil insulation will leak thru and cause a flash over arc. If you do this plug replacement job, use anti-sieze on the plug threads, be meticulous on blowing out the plug well to remove dirt before unscrewing the plugs, inspect all coils for flash-arc marks [white and carbon marks on coil sides] replace any coils damaged or leaking, I replaced the boots and use tune up grease [die-electric silicone grease] on the secondary coil terminals, plug boots. My first time on one of these, doing it carefully took 6 hrs.
hope this helps.
