Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

FWIW my tranny problem was not due to flat tow nor did it exibit what the OP did. The wrench light and CEL light came on. tranny did do the hard down shift thing from new which I did not care for.

The dealer pulled two codes all tranny related but decided to replace the PCM. that did not solve the wrench light issue and tranny codes immediately came up. What they then replaced was part # 9L8Z*7G136*D TCC Solenoid

In the process of replacing the PCM the computer was flashed with the latest settings which include TSB # 09-18-3 (rolling stop downshift & 2-3 & 3-4 upshift issues)

codes pulled were P0740 & P0743

FWIW the tranny has worked great since....ymmv

Ya see, since the trouble codes came from the PCM, it just stands to reason,
the problem is in the PCM!

Just like black smoke coming out of the tail pipe means you need a new tail pipe..

There is at least one other TSB about the 6F35 other than TSB # 09-18-3 which include DTCs showing up.

Here is the update on the car:

My car was at the dealer this time for 3 days and they apparently did extended road tests and it did not act up at all nor could they pull any codes during the time it was there. The service rep called and said that they checked the lines and they were fine and they updated the PCM and he was hoping that’s all it was. The car is still not driving properly at all--it is still shifting very hard and the car seems to slip out of gear when it is shifting.

I imagine it's only a matter of time until this happens again. Next time it is in I will definitely have them do the TSB's that pertain to the transmission. At this point, I am one more service visit and/or 6 more days of it being in for service before I can start the lemon law stuff so that is what I am hoping for right now so I can get a new car and be done with this!

Just out of curiosity, did you check your ATF level after you took delivery in June?
And was the level normal?

Has anyone had a problem with their 2009 escape transmission. When it is put into reverse it makes a banging sound. I contacted the dealer and was told that it wasn't a problem but it has happened a couple more times. Has anyone else had this problem. The dealer said that there wasn't any problem.

No I did not check the ATF level when I took delivery. Is that something they should have checked when I took it in for the initial issue?

Nice writeup. P0740 and P0743 are related to the TQ converter clutch..specifically for electrical issues with the clutch control solenoid.

The diag flows for sensor/controller items (in general) typically have the tech check the electrical resistance, and if it checks out, then check the wiring, and if it checks out, replace the PCM. There are separate codes for solenoid MECHANICAL operation failures so I am sure that if you did not have these codes, they simply followed the flowchart and swapped the PCM. So they must have mis-diagnosed the solenoid the first time around.

Have a look at this tech paper, goes into some detail of transmission codes, the TCC codes in particular are on page 194.

http://www.motorcraftservice.com/vdi.../OBDSM1001.pdf

There seems to be quite a bit being monitored and specific codes for common issues like TQ converter slippage/failure to unlock, shift flares, incorrect shifts, temperatures, etc. etc.

I wonder if you need to wipe out the learned shift memory (ie disconnect the battery for a bit) and see if it improves...or drive it for a couple hundred miles and see if it improves. Could also be related to that TCC solenoid, maybe it's not locking/unlocking correctly which could cause slipping or hard shifts.

You seem to be not the only one having issues with the transmission!

I complained right off the lot something was wrong! Clunking when I backed up, and "dead spots" taking off from a stop, passing a car and going onto on ramps or just trying to go faster. I would have my pedal to the metal and the car would sit! Then all of a sudden it would take off like a rocket and I had to hit the brakes so I wouldn't hit a car in front of me!

I told the service dept from the first day I drove it there were problems and all I heard was, "nothings wrong" We don't have time to drive with you to figure it out! I told them it would happen within the first 5 minutes! Then I LOVE THIS ONE!

"That's how it's supposed to be" OMG! Are you kidding?? Passing a car in Nebraska on a two lane highway and my car decides to stop moving? I had to finally drive off the road to get out of the way of an oncoming car! Then as I was on a on ramp it did it again and all I could see was this semi heading at me and I couldn't go anywhere! It finally kicked in and I sped forward!

Then last month I took it in again and tey said, "your trans fluid was low" we filled that and reprogrammed the computer. I asked why it was low and they said "don't know". So Friday I took it in for a check up before driving to Colorado and in less then 10 minutes they called to say (very proudly) we found the problem and you need a new transmission! OMG OMG OMG!

I was heading to Co for a cardio check up, testing and business and they act like they were so proud to have FINALLY found this????

I now have no car, no doctors to see in Denver because I'm not there! Tests I have to cancel and business I was supposed to do! Not to mention the 3 weeks off work I took to travel! I don't get vacation!

I told them I want a NEW Escape at 0% financing and NO MORE then what we owe on this one! It IS NOT asking too much if you ask me!

One sales guy last Friday said, sorry it's not our problem it's a FORD MOTOR issue!?!?!?!?!? HUH?? They got it from FORD they SOLD it to me it IS their problem!

Then, (you'll love this) they said we can have your car ready on Monday, and you'll be good to go to Colorado!?!?!?!? Again! OMG! I'm supposed to drive a car with a NEW transmission in it all that way ( I wouldn't drive it out of the lot) and pretend ALL IS OK? Would they put their kids in it and drive? I bet not! I'm going to trust a less then qualified service department who couldn't find this in 6 months to replace an ENTIRE transmission correctly?????

Then they say, you could have had a catastrophic event! I drove that darn thing up mountain peaks over 14,000 ft high and they tell me this now????

THIS IS CRAZY! We should all write a letter to Ford and tell them they have a HUGE issue with more cars then they think!!

Thanks for letting me vent!
