Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Post HELP!! getting really frustrated.

Hello all,
I'm a new member and i dont know if this is the right place for this question or not. I have a 2001 ford escape and I keep getting a p0401 code. I have replaced the DPFE sensor and the EGR and I'm still getting the p0401 code. Now to add one more twist...it surges (almost dies) when I first start it for the day, but once it warms up, it runs like a top. I'm totaly lost, please HELP!

Clean or replace your IAC valve, they are known for this problem(surging, etc). Did you replace the EGR valve itself?

P0401 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected

With a new EGR valve and a new DPFE, it is likely a clogged EGR passageway.

Should one use something like pipe-cleaners from walmart to clean/clear them?

did you verify the vacuum control is ok to the EGR? PCM electrical output to vac control solenoid, vac in/vac out of solenoid? EGR issue may be related to your cold-start issue

Quick way to test EGR.

With the engine idling apply an extranal vacuum directly to the EGR valve. The engine should run rough/die. If not, the passage from the EGR valve to the intake is clogged.
