Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Default 2002 Ford Escape brake hissing noise

Hissing or vacume or air noise coming from under brake pedal, when you push the brake pedal down it stops, when you accelerate it gets louder, after taking foot off brake it will make loud air rush noise or squeak. I pushed the foam around the pedal were it goes through the floor board tighter and the rubber gromet that helped for a day or so then started again, could it be the vacume booster leaking vacume and pulling air through the gromet?

Default noise from brake pedal

I had the same poise from my 2001 Escape. It also stopped when i put pressure on the pedal. I had to replace the vacumn seal on the brake pedal. It is very expensive, but the only answer.

Default brake pedal noise

I had the same noise from the brake pedal of my 2001 Escape. It stopped when I put presssure on the pedal. I had to replace the brake booster for about $150.That fixed it.

Common problem.

It is the brake booster.

Default Booster

Is it a difficult job to replace the booster and are they any specialty tools needed?

Default Brake Booster Hissing Sound

My wife's 2002 Escape is hissing like an Alley Cat. Mechanic says it is likely the Brake Booster and it can be replaced including the cost of the part for about $500. Ughh! Is this a reasonable price? Can I do it myself? I have two left thumbs.

Aftermarket (non-Ford) booster is between $75 - $125. This is not a job for a new "shade tree mechanic". The space is cramped. You have to remove the master cylinder first, which means after re-assembling you will have to bleed the brakes.

Leave this one to the pros, but $500 sounds high to me.
