What is white sponge/filter junk loose in 09 6F35 Trans?

When I pulled the transmission (6F35) dipstick on my 09 Escape AWD, it pulled out with a piece of white plastic foam/filter/sponge material that came out wrapped around the dipstick a few inches down from the dispstick-to-tube seat. It is irregular in shape, about 1/2" x 1/2" x 1/8". Any ideas what broke loose from where?

You may be curious to know that the ATF went very low while doing a 4Flat-tow behind my RV, and sprayed over a lot of the engine compartment. And, you may already know there is an issue where some of the transmissions are going bad while doing this allowed tow.

But, all I need to know for now is what came apart inside the tranny, so I can have that info in my back pocket while talking to the local dealership shop. They are really good people, but they have not seen this before.
