Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Default 2008 Escape 4WD XLT Acceleration noise

Just curious if anyone else is experiencing this. I am hearing a whooping sound when accelerating in first. The noise is quite faint but still noticeable. The sound only seems to happen for a couple of seconds then stops. The origin of the sound appears to be the front of the Escape. The sounds seems to be louder if I am driving up and incline accelerating from a stop or near stop. I thought it might be related to a TSB issued for the 2009 4WD module but the 2008 module is not reprogrammable according to my dealer. Anyone have the same issue or have any ideas on what might be causing it?

sounds like you are hearing a small bit of driveline resonance.

As you mention there are several differences between the 2008 and 2009 most notably transmission and rear suspension. I don't know if they use the same rear-end (differential) though.

The 2009 has two TSBs for noises that I am aware of...the TSB fix for "hoot" is a PCM flash, but there is another for driveline whine...the fix for that is a mechanical damper/isolator. I just today had the damper installed on my 2009 and it seems quieter (I need to drive it more to be sure). If you are under warranty it might be worth a check with the dealer and see if there is anything they can do, or if the TSB is backwards compatible.

I thought I read somewhere on here there was a TSB for older models to install an isolator bushing under the center driveshaft bearing...if true perhaps that would solve/reduce the issue for you.

Can someone post a .pdf of this TSB. I have seen the TSB for the "hoot" noise. My Escape has a small occasional "hoot" when first accelerating from dead stop and wasn't going to worry about it unless it got louder.
I did want to learn more about this damper for the "whine" noise at speed

Thanks

The PDF exceeds file limits here but here is the Issue as they them.

ISSUE
Some 2009 Escape and Mariner vehicles equipped
with automatic transmission and four wheel drive
(4WD) system may exhibit a whine noise from the
power transfer unit (PTU) at highway speeds 60-70
MPH (96-112 Km/h).

Oddly enough your the first person that's said that it corrected the problem! Most say, including myself that it "may" have reduced it as that's all the TSB claims to do.

My ScanGuage-II shows that it increased the amount of torque sent to the rear wheels a few percent when leaving a dead stop.
