Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Thumbs down 2003 Ford Escape - crank put hole in engine block

My 2003 Limited blew the engine on Friday - no warning! Lucky we weren't driving at high speed on the highway! Don't know what would have happened at 100 km.
Mechanic thinks the main bearing failed and the crank flew through bottom of motor. Oil pan was destroyed - there's oil all over. Escape has 53,000km and 36 month warranty was up May 2006. All maintenance was done according to the book. Guess what? - Ford says it's my repair. So now I'm stuck getting a new motor (Ford wants $7,700 for a rebuilt 3.0 duratec). I've read lots of posts where this has happened to other duratecs between 40,000 and 60,000 km. My family has always driven Fords - my dad still has a 54 and 64. I've always driven a Ford. But this is the last one - and I don't know how long I'm going to keep it. Might be better to get rid of it before it happens again!

Default new information and picture

Have update. Lots of work to take out motor - even had to take out front wheel axle and alternator. Problem wasn't what they thought - found that a piston broke and caused all that damage. New motor went in today - not connected yet. Have pictures of the piston - bottom of the motor etc. It looks pretty sad right now!
