Ford EscapeThe Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.
I've got a 2001 ESCAPE XLT and it is having problems starting. It will turn over and crank, but it is slow to catch. And, it doesn't do it every time. It seems that if I have the AC off it doesn't happen. Once it starts, it runs fine (it never stalls). Any ideas?
Key turns, lights & radio work - no engine cranking
2003 Escape - just got it used, like the car - overall - so far. Got in the other day and the key would turn, but no engine cranking - not even noise. Put it in neutral, started. A few days later, same thing except it took another (different) key to start it. Could the key codes be fading? Is this a starter issue? Any ideas where to start - besides the dealer at this time?
definitely had this same problem.. took it into the shop to see what was wrong, and it wouldnt do it for them so they just said nothing was wrong, there were no codes and everything looked great.
Using a DVOM with long leads, connect leads to the battery and take the DVOM into the cabin with you. Turn DVOM to Volts and crank the engine. How far does the load take the reading down? Does it bounce right back to 14+ volts? If you turn on all accessories does the reading bounce right back to 14+ volts. If so then your battery and alternator are good.
I am chasing the same gremlin right now on the wifes 2001 Escape and believe I either have a weak main ground connection or too much resistance in the ground wire. Possibly a bad connection at the starter.
