Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Default could be better...

After I had the torque converter replaced at the 5th year, mine ('01 escape xlt 4x4) yields 15 mpg (87 octane) in only city drive (no highway)- 17~18mpg in city 80% (highway for 30 miles), 20+mpg in city/highway 50% (highway for 200 miles). Before the replacement, if 91 was used, it yielded as if the torque converter were replaced. The higher octane, the better mpg due to the improvement of torque. However, if you could replace the torque converter by any chance, I would highly recommend it by now.

I have a ford extended warranty and claimed under the warranty. It is hard to prove a certain malfunction of the torque converter. I had a symptom caused by a bad torque converter. When the car climbed a hill on route or highway at around 2000 rpm, the down shifting occurred with a noise as though the vehicle drove over the groves on the shoulder. Sometimes the rev indicator fluctuated between 2 to 3.

1. Gas Mileage can vary but 15-22 or so in mixed driving is OK. Winter gas is less efficient.

2. The transmission 'shudder' is common, I cured mine with a full transmission flush and replaced with DIII/Mercon not Mercon V which is synthetic. OEM is DII/DIIi/Mercon.

I have the 4x4 V6 and I get 20 to 22mpg mixed driving. The best I ever got was 25mpg on highway. 120k plus mileage now too!

V6 or I4? I have a 05 V6 4wd. I get an overall average (average taken since i bought the vehicle in April 06) of 22.5. This is almost all city or suburb. I usually dont need to let the engine wind to more than 3k rpm to more than keep up with traffic. I get the best milage if I accelerate at about 2500 rpm.

Ah, yes the transmission shudder at 40mph. I had this also, and the cure was changing the transmission fluid as stated. You can do it yourself, it is as easy as changing the oil. I added some Lucas Transmission Fix to mine the last change on recomendation of another mechanic friend. Cleaned up the shifting amazingly!. Great stuff. No, I dont work for them - just when you find a good product, worth telling people about. Google it.

I just completed a 1500 mile trip in my 2008 Escape LTD. V6, 4X4. The only changes I've made to the vehicle is to add a K&N air filter, and I use Synthetic Oil. The trip consisted of highway and city driving through the Rocky Mountains.
I averaged 9 Litres per 100 Km's, which converts to a little over 31 mpg.
With straight city driving, I get 11 L/100 Km's
I have found the speed you drive has the biggest effect on fuel mileage.
