Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Not Ford bashing. But Ford Escape does have a major problem child. Bought a 2002. Trans problem. Went to Ford to get some info, said they never had any trans problems with Escape. Must have been Jim Carrey in movie "liar, Liar" I was talking to. Went to local trans shop and they said they have had alot of problems. Estimate as much as $3000 to rebuild it. Called local junk yards and said they sell them as soon as they come in as they have had major problems, very hard to find and good chance of used one going out soon also. Thought that was a bitter pill to sowllow until I almost bought a 2003 Saturn VUE, with trans problems. $5000. quoted by Saturn to rebuild it. People on the lower wage scale (which is most of us) cant afford a new car with warranty. We buy a 10 year old clunker with 135 to 150k miles on it for $2000 to $3000 and hope we can get a couple years out of it but find the trans is ready or past ready to blow and $3K to fix it. Want to hear a consipercy theory. If the govt. tries to take away our guns or cars they have a fight on their hands, but they can mandate EPA requirements and other things on mfg. they will only last a certain length of time, before failure, then you have to buy a new one or repairing it is very expensive, forcing people to find alternate means of transportation. The end result is they win or pick your pocket clean.

My 2009 V6/Auto leaked w 11,00 miles. Like you, I found first evidence on the driveway. I checked and found the fluid low, off the stick. Also found foreign matter on the dipstick. The dealer replaced the cooler, saying it had a leak. They refilled it After filling, I checked the fluid and it looks blackened to me. Since the trans runs ok, they refused to go further. They won't even take the pan off to look for more foreign matter. I RV tow mine, so my experience fits in with a lot of others. I guess I will just drive it and tow until it blows.

You must have a better dealer than I was towed to, for them to replace yours. Someone on the forums is on their fourth. I went ahead and bought the 7yr/100K miles ESP from Ford. I like the car and plan on keeping it, but don't want to pay for my later transmissions. I figure the warrantee will pay for my transmissions after the 60K factory warrantee runs out.

Good luck to you, and all of us, for that matter.

ps - do you tow yours?

Hello, I have a 2007 Ford Escape with 34,000 miles and the warranty expired two months ago. Today the overdrive light started flashing and the transmission kept slipping. So I was left stranded. I never towed anything and had it serviced when it was due. I have never had any problems until today.

Worldtraveler, the 2007 used a totally different transmission so your problem is not related to anything in this thread.

Hello Friends....

I have a 2001 Ford Escape with Catalytic Converter Failure with Bank 1 broken Honey Combs. 120000 Miles. Bank 2 has a Cracked seam by the weld and leaks. This seems to be a common problem with Escapes. I used to like FORDS but man, I am sorry I bought a Ford. Catalytic Converters should last more than 100,000 Miles. I find all kinds of people complaining about their ESCAPES. Why is Ford not doing anything about it? I am very curious if anyone else had Problems with their ESCAPES.

Thanks
