Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Default I don`t have my escape anymore

Well, Our 03 Escape XLT 4X4. which ran good need a recall of the throttle cable. Ford wouldn`t let me have the cable so I can do it, so I was new in town, moved there a few months prior to this happening so I wanted to get in with the new dealership. While I dropped the escape off at the dealer for the recal it was 33,XXX miles and said to service the transmission and look over the vehicle. The escape was flawless at this point. when we got the escape back, I just picked it up looked over the bill. In doing so I see that they installed MerconV for trans fluid and that is a big NO No for that year. After contacting the dealer they said they installed the right fluid and I even showed them an e-mail from a very reputable Ford dealer saying they put in the wrong stuff...
Well needless to say, 16,000 miles later the torque converter started to shudder, then bang. After reading one of the escape forums and dsicussing this, it`s appears that the MerconV was responsible for the failure or emminent failure. I traded in the truck and purchased Nissan Xterra... IMHO it`s more truck than the escape, solid, gets the same mileage and the towing capacity is higher. That was the last time I did any business with that dealership, I wouldn`t take a vehicle from them if they gave it to me...

Well Ford Motor Company completely disagrees with your condemnation of Mercon V !

From The Lube Report

Quote:
Chintan Ved, based at Ford’s Automatic Transmission New Product Center in Livonia, Mich., is the company’s lead development engineer for ATF.

“All transmissions recommending Mercon ATF can now be serviced with Mercon V,” Ved later told Lube Report. “Mercon V is a tighter specification, requiring better anti-oxidation, antiwear and anti-shudder properties from service-fill ATFs. We are doing this because we want to ensure our customers get the better fluid.
Mercon V is the only Ford Motor Company authorized replacement ATF, regardless of what year transmission you have !

I just had to replace the transmission cooler on my 2008 Escape! It is only 8 months old and has 7000kms! I thought that was pretty bad. I pulled my 1800 lbs boat across town a couple of times, but other than that this vehicle has had easy driving. Does anyone else seem a little skeptical of these transmissions?

Hey Scooter,

How much did your magnaflow cost? Also, does K&N make the whole cool air intake system, or just the actual air filter?

Cheers,
Rory

Default Ford Escape 2004 , 70K Transmission Failure

YEP, I wanted to add that my Escape "also" lost it's transmission and the bill will be a little over $3K - Ouch ! Started to need more gas to come away from stop, and would sometime act like it was shifting into 2nd at highway speed. In a matter of 3 days, the trans was dead. Ford dealership, although very nice, is working to get a rebuilt installed. No Warranty.

I would encourage anyone who is experiencing premature problems with your Escapes transmission to go to HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV. It seems as though there are recalls out on transmission cooling units and lines for the 2008 Ford Explorer, Ford Explorer Sport Trac and also the Mercury Mountaineer. Unfortunately, ford has yet to put out a recall on the Escape. I am hoping with a little effort, ford will recall the Escapes also, and show a little faith in their engineering. Instead of sticking the consumer with a large repair bill. Especially if you are just over your warranty.

Transmission began slipping at 26k and has been back to service shop 3 times since then. Check engine light comes on every 2 weeks it seems.
