Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Default Transmission problems

Has anyone else had problems with the transmissions going out on their Escape's. I have had to replace 2 transmissions in 75,000 miles. The first one was after driving through 10" of snow and the second was after driving through 1-2" of rain on a highway. Anyone, any help here is appreciated.

www.escape-central.com has a few owners that have had transmission problems, like you. I have an '04 XLT V6 with 25K miles and haven't had any problems.

I just replaced the trans in my '02 Escape last week. Didn't take long for it to go from ok to bad (matter of 2 or 3 days w/slipping out of gear and not grabbing at all)
at 91K miles...that is the first that I know it was touched. Luckily i got the extended warranty....

Default My "01 Escape transmission problems

I had to have the converter replaced on my '01 Escape at 35,000 miles. Like another respondent I'm glad I bought an extented warranty when I purchased it in '03. The bill came to a $1000. Before the repair, it would shift okay but it made a clanging noise sometimes, not always, as it did. My repair mechanic told me the Escape trannies are noisy even when they have no problems. He's right, at least I've found, that the case with mine. I won't buy another one.

Default Transmission failure

I bought my Escape 2.5 years ago new, and it has 54,000 miles on it. Unfortunately I didn't buy the extended warranty. The transmission problems started with the OD light flashing, engine light coming on, and about 5 miles later I couldn't shift into reverse and then into drive. I got it into drive finally, drove it to a mechanic at about 35 mph with the RPMs revving and with it stalling at times, and parked it - since it was a holiday weekend and nothing was open. When the mechanic looked at it, he said the transmission would have to be replaced, and since I was out of town, I had it towed to a Ford dealer, thinking about the warranty. I had to get a rental car to get home, and then drove 5 hours back that weekend to pick up my car. Total cost was $3,200 plus rental car expenses - felt a little vulnerable since I had no choice but to go to an unknown dealership, being from out of town. I have a warranty on the remanufactured transmission, but at this mileage, I wasn't expecting this kind of expense - I can't afford it, and Ford customer service said since it's out of warranty, they can't do anything. Not asking for much, just a good faith effort - I guess it's my fault for not buying the extended warranty, but I don't plan on buying another Ford.

Angry

I just learned that the automatic transmission on my 2002 Ford Escape needs to be replaced after only 47,000 miles and regular servicing! Over the past 2 weeks I'd noticed some hesitation shifting into third gear. But yesterday it failed to shift into first at a red light and I had to get it towed to the dealer. Other than 2 recalls, I had experienced no major problems and was pleased overall with the vehicle. Unfortunately, I don't have the extended warranty so will be out at least $3000 for a reconditioned transmission. This is my first SUV, and my first and last Ford. I'll be looking to trade it in as soon as I feel I've recouped the $3000 investment, probably looking at a Honda CRV.

I have a 2002 escape 4x4 and it's been having trouble shifting gears, but only on hills. I just noticed this b/c I moved from California to Connecticut and there's way more hills out here. It'll downshift while it's going up a hill (to get more power??) but it'll go up to like 3000 RPMs then vibrate and shift up again. I dont know if its the transmission or what. I just had the transmission fluid changed and that helped a little but there's still a problem. Any ideas as to what the problem might be?

I just had the transmission go out on my '06 Mariner--and it's new--I've had it 7 months and put 11, 000 miles on it. At least it's under warranty, but I'm pretty mad.

Default Escape Transmission Problem

I have a 2004 Escape with only 40,000 miles. The transmission has just died and the dealer tells me it's going to cost $3600+ to repair it. The problems came on rather quickly. It started acting funny one day and the next day it just died. I work out of my house, so there's no daily highway driving involved. Just occasional trips to the post office and the store. Of course, my warranty ran out 6 months ago. With such light use, I can't imagine what would have caused it to fail, unless there's some serious defect in Ford transmissions. Would love to hear from anyone with similar experiences.

The transmission in my 05 escape with 76000 miles just went. 2800$ to repair. The mechanic said its a quality issue, and that they see a lot of escapes with the same issue. He said last week and 04 escape came in with the same issue at 40,000 miles. Fortunatly it still ran, I drove it to the dealer and swapped it out for an 08. Hopefully they get a handle on this issue!!
