Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Default 2002 Catalytic Converter

Recently my 2002 Ford Escape 65,000 miles felt like it was stuck in low gear with a solid engine light on. Went to my mechanic and and he stated the CC was blown apart. Replaced and drove for 1 week same problem. This time he feels that parts from the 1st converter got sucked in the line and destroyed the second converter. I understand there is three on my car.Has anyone else exp this problem. All responses greatly appreciated

Unhappy 2002 Escape being held for ransom !!!!!!!!!!

I to have a 2002 Ford Escape with 56,000 miles and notice I was losing power and also shifting badly. I took it to the local dealer ( Expecting to pay for transmission repair ).
But after the tech looked it over he infromed me the transmission was good and that my Catalytic Converter was plugged and that it was covered under the ford 8 year 80,000 mile warranty. I thought I was lucky but I have been waiting for the dealer to get the parts in for over three weeks and still have no idea where or when they will get the parts in. I have been infromed 2 of the 3 have been recieved. I have also been informed that Ford will not honor a loaner vehicle. I have called the 800 number for Ford customer care twice but they inform me to work with my local dealer ( What are they there for ? ). I have been calling the local dealer daily and no one knows when I will be able to get my Escape back. This has been a real burden to me bacause we are a two car family with my wife and me working differnt times and places with two boys makes it impossible to car pool. In the past I have been an avid Ford fan almost every thing I have owned has had the blue oval. My favorite Nascar driver is Greg Biffle who drives a Ford. I also found out from the dealer that last week they got in a 2006 Escape with the same problem and were able to get the parts in and the Escape out in two days!!!! I feel like my Escape is being held ransom. I hope you turn out better on your situation. I am sorry to say that if this is the best that Ford can do my next vehicle will not be a Ford.

Hi thanks for the information.I was not aware of the 8 year 80,000 warranty. Also I did not have it repaired by Ford. I wonder will it be covered. How did you hear of this.

Unhappy 2002 Ford Escape catalytic converter

I have a 2002 Ford Escape. I also had a problem with the catalytic converter. It was in the shop from March 5, 2007 until April 12, 2007. They replaced all three cats and the muffler. Supposedly there were no cats available in the United States. When we received it back we drove 200 miles and the cats have to be replaced again. We have 78,000 miles so we are just below the 80,000 mile warranty. Corporate Ford has been no help. The dealer we took it to have been sympathetic but Ford Corp has been no help to them either. They do not know what is causing the problem. They are waiting to hear from the Ford engineers. We have asked for loaners but to no avail. Ford Corporation just gives you the run around.

My repair shop told me to bring it to Ford because it was covered under warranty.

I have a NEW 3 week old 2007 Escape XLT Sport V6 that needs the catalytic converter(s) replaced, according to the dealer's service techs/manager. Of course it will be under warranty, but found out about the problem after the check engine light came on, and we subsequently took it to be checked out.

Definately NOT a good feeling to have something this crucial needing to be replaced with having had the car for less than 3 weeks.

Default 2002 Escape

I too have a 2002 Escape with 58,000 miles on it. Over the last few months we've noticed the pick-up was sluggish. Over a 5 day period the pick-up dropped tremedously. I checked the oil and there was gas in the oil which I now know can come from a stopped up CC. We took the car to Ford and it is the Catylitic Converter. They told me about the warrently, which I had read about in these postings, so this will not cost me anything.

They told me possibly a week to get the parts, which on this forum I'm seeing people are waiting much longer. While Ford will not pay for a rental under this warranty, the dealership rented us a car today until the parts come in. I didn't even ask, it was offered and we didn't even purchase the car from this dealership. That's going above and beyond and incidents like this keep me bying Fords. This is Pinnacle Ford in Little Rock, AR.

I just purchased a 2004 Escape this last January. One day while driving it out of town in February, the vehicle lost so much power that I couldn't get it over 15 MPH. Had it towed to the Ford Dealership and they informed me that it was a clogged converter and apparently this is a common problem on these cars. Also these parts must be in short supply because everyone I speak to has had to wait a few weeks to get the replacement parts in.

I had 72,000 miles on my Escape when this happened and the dealership told me this was covered under a federal warranty.

I had the same problems,

My converter clogged up, the pressure caused the piston head to go through the engine wall.

It happened to me about 2 weeks ago, and I had an engine purchased for $1500 Canadian and put into the 2002 escape, I also had the converter closest to the muffler replaced, as this was the severely clogged one, and I had another one replaced as well due to a small crack in the casing.

I had it all fixed within a week, and It's running beautifully... I didnt go for the $800 replacement converters from ford though, I purchased 2 aftermarket converters which are designed for the escape... at $250 a pop, i'd much rather go for those.
