Ford EscapeThe Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.
i have the 2003 xlt. every once in a while i will start the vehicle and it will start perfectly fine then for some reason it dies. it doesnt sputter or cough or anything, it just dies. if i keep the engine revved up slightly it will run but the instant i take my foot off the gas, it will die.
there is no consistency to this problem either, its very sporadic. then after a while, its fine and it runs like normal.
any thoughts on what the reason is would be appreciated
It is the idle air control (IAC) valve. It is gummed up and needs replacing or cleaning. This is a common Escape problem. I had the same thing. It died when I started it and would not start. Eventually, it started dying at stop signs and lights unless I kept the idle up. You can buy one yourself and replace it and find instructions on the internet like I did. Or you can go to Autozone, tell them you need something to clean an IAC valve and then take it off and clean it. I did that and it started clean every time since. That option cost me $5 and about an hour of time.
Wife's Tribute has these symptoms and first thing to come to mind was the IAC. Haven't looked under the hood just yet, but the IAC, is it located on the TB or somewhere on the intake manifold? All for cleaning it up and seeing how it does, but any ideas on cost for a new one?
