Ford Escape The Ford Escape has been thoroughly updated, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it America's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. We'd call the Escape a little truck among small SUVs. Its new styling deliberately invokes Ford's larger, truck-based SUVs.

Question Transmissions rumors

I just bought a 2004 Escape XLT with 50,500 miles on it. It's in good shape with no major damage reported by Carfax. I've been reading where a lot of people have transmission problems. I called my local dealer to see what they said. They told me they haven't really heard of that in the Escapes. I looked at reviews on Edmunds.com and only 1 of 214 people had a transmission problem.

Here's my issue... I paid for an extended warranty, but I'm trying to keep costs down. I'm just wondering if I should keep that warranty or not.

Does anyone know what the ratio of bad transmissions to good ones is?

Or could you answer the poll about your own transmission experience?

Thanks

You might want to keep the warranty. My mom has a 2004 escape xlt as well and her transmission went at about 50,000 miles...she had bought hers practically new and didn't get an extended warranty...she had to have the transmission replaced at the cost of about $3,000.00

Here is another Escape forum that has more info on the transmissions and tips to keep from having problems. Mostly keeping the fluid changed. Go to the "Engine and Transmission" section plenty of info.

Escapecentral is the worst most rude and unfriendly forum I have ever had the displeasure of stopping by. There were a few there that seemed to know their stuff, but it was full of blow hard idiots that felt their knowledge came straight from heaven, and no one else could possibly know anything.

Rudest bunch I have ever seen. Bunch of idiots.

HAHAH.. good qoute permission to use it? truthfully i think that the problem with most forums, no comment about escape central but alot of forums is that it usually is composed of 16-20 year olds who have very little to no automotive experience other than what they have seen from tv or fixing on their own car which really doesnt provide that much help to others, and far too many answers given to people on a forum are answers that someone heard from someone else and they believe them to be true, no substantial data to back up their theory, nor certified test standards to prove when they claim that one product is worse than another.

We've got an 02 Escape that had transmission shifting problems since we bought it with 54K miles on it. Finally last August with around 100K the tranny called it quits. We had a re-man unit installed wich came with a 75K warranty. The service people and sales guys said that it was not uncommon with the 2001 models but after that they have been pretty solid. I guess our 02 was a late 01 in sheeps clothing.

They kind of confirmed that because we have the dash switch for shifting from AWD to locking in 4WD which they said was removed in the 2002 model year.

im pretty sure that they are wrong, i have a friend that bought a escape brand new in 2003 and it had the 4wd switch and i have an 2002 and it has the switch as well, from what ive seen i think that the switch came equipped in all 3.0L V6 w/4wd from 2001 to 2004.
