Ford Escort Ford Escort ZX2 is a hot-looking compact coupe with a rakish design. Yet its handsome interior reveals a roomy back seat and surprisingly large trunk. ZX2 provides responsive handling and good road manners and its engine delivers decent power. At the same time, the ZX2 is a practical car, with plenty of room in the back seats for friends.

Default a unique problem

I have read all of the threads on the ford escorts. I only found one thread that is kind of the same of what i have.

here is the set up... the 2002 4dr 2.0 liter 76kmiles starts up fine but dies upon the rpms going into normal operation range.

the car was just donated and had a tune up and the ecm replaced.

what i did was some basic trouble shooting. the fuel pump is audible, the spark plugs are fine and compression seems to be fine as well. i reset the ecm via disconnecting the batt.

before the actual problem manifested, after the ecm was replaced, the car ran fine and went on a few long trips. over 100 miles total.

It seems like a vaccume problem but i am not used to working on this model. so what do you all think.

btw this is not a one post just to figure out what my problem is thread. I will be here for a while. this is my first post so i look foreward to hanging out here.

thanks all

Without hearing or seeing check that the IAC valve in the intake is not carboned up, you could check for vacuum leaks by checking the hoses

I did check the vaccume hoses by taking some all the way off or just taking one end off and blowing air into them, not too much pressure though. I am not sure what the IAC though. Perhaps you could elaborate on that. I was also thinking about the egr. What do you think? Thank you for your reply.

Idle air control valve. My exploder had it go out. It started making a whistling sound though as it was sucking air through it into the intake....

Smile try this

hindsight,

this problem sounds like the throttle position sensor located on your throttle body. When these things go out, the car will start and run normally for a while. Eventually, the car will die out every time you come to a stop. This part is easy to change and inexpensive if you go to an auto supply place (not the ford dealer). This part can go out even on low mileage cars, I had one go out on one of my 2000 s/r 's with only 32K miles.

First post, although if I keep this car then I'm certain there'll be a lot more to follow...

I have a 1982 Lynx (same as the Escort but with a different set of teeth and a nose job) and I just started experiencing this same problem about thirty minutes ago. The car was running normally (except that there's some sort of vacuum leak and so it likes to die at times. When my foot's not on the brake pedal I can hear rushing air due to the rubber piece there ((I want to call it a boot)) being ripped in multiple places but that is another story.) I've touched up the idle to help with this problem but essentially I drive the beast with two feet.

The car was completely out of gas for the last few days. I had to use a can to gas it up and then prime it with the can as well but then it ran, as well as it has been anyway. I drove it for a bit with no new problems and then after I got home I drove it around the block to show the car off to my sister and it stalled, and then stalled again. Now when I restart it it will idle (as well as it ever has, anyway, which is pretty nasty and close to death) but the motor won't run in the normal operating/accelerating zone.

My car has the 1.6L four cylinder with a two barrel carberator, so I don't know if my machine has the same sensors and valves etc. that were suggested for investigation earlier in the thread.

I've heard multiple people say 'check for vacuum leaks' and I expect that this is a problem with my car, but I don't know exactly which vacuum parts are being referred to.

Could I get any suggestions or a little more detail about what I should look at with respect to the vacuum system?

Thanks in advance.
