Ford EscortFord Escort ZX2 is a hot-looking compact coupe with a rakish design. Yet its handsome interior reveals a roomy back seat and surprisingly large trunk. ZX2 provides responsive handling and good road manners and its engine delivers decent power. At the same time, the ZX2 is a practical car, with plenty of room in the back seats for friends.
I am having a very similar problem with my 1999 escort zx2 2.0L DOHC m/t. I First had a noise come out of no where about 6 months ago coming from the front of the motor. It sounded like a whistle. It went away and didn't come back until about a week or so ago. Now i was getting this whistle when the car was warm and rarely stalling out as well. I got close to all the pulleys and thought i figured out it was coming from the top middle one(idler pulley). I turned the car off and was able to feel a little play. I decided to tighten it with a 15mm wrench. I tightened it a quarter turn. I started the car and the whistle was louder. Here is where it gets interesting. I start it up to drive home from work and did not here the noise at all. The noise is no longer there. My car started to stall out a little more frequently but still occasional like 2-4 times a week, no check engine light either. Today it stalled out twice when coming to a brisk stop and after the second time the engine light popped on. I drive it about 50 miles a day and have about 195,000 miles on the car. I keep it tuned up and about a year ago had some work done on it which include new clutch, engine mounts and the idle air control valve because that was bad too. Please if any one has an idea what to do next it would be much apreciated. Thanks
Get that code scanned and post the exact code here. It is probably going to be a 'P0171' or an idle control overspeed error. Either way that means you have a vaccum leak.
