Ford Escort Ford Escort ZX2 is a hot-looking compact coupe with a rakish design. Yet its handsome interior reveals a roomy back seat and surprisingly large trunk. ZX2 provides responsive handling and good road manners and its engine delivers decent power. At the same time, the ZX2 is a practical car, with plenty of room in the back seats for friends.

Default 2000 Escort ZX2 timing belt question

I recently replaced the timing belt and used the TDC and metal through the slots on the back on the cams method to try and ensure proper timing was kept. After finishing reassembly of everything else, the engine started right up, idled nicely and ran fine when first fired up. After it warmed up, the engine would die at intersections (or when slowing below 1000-1200 RPM), it is an automatic. A friend of mine plugged in and found this code P0340 showing up. I know carbed motors much better than the new electronic ones, and am not totally mechanicaly challenged, but am beginning to feel this way. Has anyone else experinced this glitch after installing a new timing belt? And if so, what did you do to rectify the problem? I do have a new camshaft position (CMP) sensor but have yet to try it. Any suggestions will be extremely welcomed.

The TDC peg is not reliable. Depending on who it was sourced from makes the difference if it works or not. Your timing needs to be redone.

I wrote a how-to years ago and it is up on Team ZX2.

Default Escort timing belt response

To ZX2Fast, thank you very much!! I have learned a valuable lesson on this latest adventure, which is to post a question about whatever I'm working on, before I start any work. Again, many thanks.
