Ford Escort Ford Escort ZX2 is a hot-looking compact coupe with a rakish design. Yet its handsome interior reveals a roomy back seat and surprisingly large trunk. ZX2 provides responsive handling and good road manners and its engine delivers decent power. At the same time, the ZX2 is a practical car, with plenty of room in the back seats for friends.

Default Error code P1443 with Check Engine light. Do I need to worry?

I have been getting check engine light for 3 days and today i took it for a check up. The error code that came up on computer was P1443. The guy didnt tell me much other than to bring the car back for a thorough checkup. Googling the error code gives some results about problem with EVAP system. I dont know what it is. I seriously dont have any $$ right now to spend, so I wanted to ask you guys if I can drive with this kind of error for some time before getting it fixed, or this is a serious kind of error.

It depends.

Does your state have an inspection program ?

Do you care about the fact that you are polluting the air that the rest of us must breathe ?

This string is a couple months old, so I don't know if you've fixed it yet. The P1443 fault says it's the evap canister purge valve, but it's actually probably the associated sensor. If you try to stuff all the gas you can into the tank by repeatedly topping off the tank, the vapor system floods with gas and fails the sensor. The only fix is a new sensor ($26 two years ago from Ford. Sorry, no part # handy...) The sensor and valve are mounted beneath the air filter housing. The manual says to fill to the second click off... believe it.

What if you don't try to stuff as much gas in as possible...would it still more likely be the sensor?

Is there any way to test to see if they are working before replacing?

Hi there guys..This is an old thread but just want to know what happened to Mr taylorman and on how he was able to solve this one. I encountered same problems with my check engine light and same error code occurred. I am not able to go to a local mechanic yet. Thanks a lot.
