Ford EscortFord Escort ZX2 is a hot-looking compact coupe with a rakish design. Yet its handsome interior reveals a roomy back seat and surprisingly large trunk. ZX2 provides responsive handling and good road manners and its engine delivers decent power. At the same time, the ZX2 is a practical car, with plenty of room in the back seats for friends.
the belt broke on my 97 escort replaced it and now the car will not shift smoothly and it will not go over 50 mph....did not do this before the belt broke also is idling rough Help! Have no idea what happened, or what it could be.
look at any connectors that are in the front of the engine that could have gotten struck by the belt when it broke.
idk what engine you have, but a possible candidate is the crankshaft position sensor, or possibly the camshaft position sensor.

i'm female and stupid here on cars........not sure where connectors are....please tell me where to look......this is my 16 year olds car. Have limited funds to spend on it so trying to figure it out here..Thanks would appreciate help here.
Here is a diagram of a 97 escort 2.0 L engine with some labels.
As I mentioned earlier, the CrankShaft position sensor's connection may have gotten struck by the belt as it slapped around under the hood.
Some of the sensors are connected by little plastic connectors to the wiring harness that goes to various components and the cars computer.
You can also take it to autozone or some other parts store and have them extract diagnostic codes from your car's computer. AZ does it as a free service. Other stores have followed suit, so you might call around.
Write down the code numbers.
