Ford Escort Ford Escort ZX2 is a hot-looking compact coupe with a rakish design. Yet its handsome interior reveals a roomy back seat and surprisingly large trunk. ZX2 provides responsive handling and good road manners and its engine delivers decent power. At the same time, the ZX2 is a practical car, with plenty of room in the back seats for friends.

Default '94 escort lx stall problem

I have a '94 escort lx, which was just recently put back on the road. It had been sitting for about a year with a blown transmission, and since I replaced it the check engine light has been on. I tried using a code reader, but it won't read any codes.

Since it's been back on the road I replaced the spark plugs and wires because it was missfiring (before I found the problem I thought whatever was causing the missfire was also causing the check engine light)

Now it seems to run fine, but the check engine light is still on. The only symptom is that sometimes if I coast up to a stop sign, etc, as soon as I push the clutch in it stalls. The majority of the time, however, it doesn't.

Anybody have any ideas or leads as to what might be causing the problem?

Default possible cause

Our Taurus had the same problem and it was the mass air flow sensor but it could also be the idle air controller. It wouldn't come up on the codes either until it happened for the mechanic and he didn't turn the key to the off position and then he finally got a code. Hope this helps.
