Ford Escort Ford Escort ZX2 is a hot-looking compact coupe with a rakish design. Yet its handsome interior reveals a roomy back seat and surprisingly large trunk. ZX2 provides responsive handling and good road manners and its engine delivers decent power. At the same time, the ZX2 is a practical car, with plenty of room in the back seats for friends.

Angry 99 zx2 timing belt

Alright so I put a timing belt on this, ran great for about 100 miles. Then the thing shredded. It was a gatorback, so not the cheap on either. Did the component kit ect ect. Its the early 99 so I read up and it says you have to adjust the timing tensioner after about 50 miles are some sites. Ok, did that on this new one. Last night, it jumped as near as i can figure because my marks dont line up any longer. So pulled the Cover off and about half the belt is shredded. Ive done my fair share of car repair but man I cant figure out why this thing is shredding after maybe one oil change again?! Any ideas would be appreciated. Its an automatic if that helps. i did replace the component kit both times. The one after 2000 miles looks alot better then the one after 50, the one after 50 had rolled edges and stuff. The car just died like a fuel pump both times. Last time it didnt get hurt, so hopefully this time the motor is good too. Did it the way haynes walked me through, my buddy has accesses to ondemand and we followed that as well. Now Im stumped and about ready to push it in the lake. Gave me a p1383 code which would be a misfire, related to timing? Well Thanks and sorry for any ranting or errors. Email me at c4markee@gmail.com as I can read emails off my phone while at work not view the page. I will be home and look at it before I go back to doing the belt.

The origanal didnt shread like this, it just split in half I guess is the easiest way to explain it. Also how am I going to reallign the cams to the crank again? I know the notches are supposed to be at the same spot.. The one in the front is about 90 degrees off the on in the back... Valves and everythign look ok. I have the plugs out but am I going to have to turn the cams with the crank in order to not build too much pressure on those valves?

Found Timing Belt - TeamZX2.com says to get the solid option crank gear. Which way/ where should the big washer with the key in it go. Between the pulley and the gear or between the gear and the engine?

Also. If I turn the car on to let it Idle the belt slides right off, starts to stop it before it does, the bottom pully. This is with only the bolt, no harm balancer on it. Just the stuff from the timing. So I am lost at the moment. Im trying to get the new gear tommorrow. We will see.

Your engines shouldn't have suffered any damage. All Escort engines with the exception of a few of the first generation are non interferrence engines.

Ok. So I guess my biggest question is this. If I have just the bolt holding the bottom gear in place, no harmmonic balancer, should I be able to let the car idle for even a minute without the timing belt falling off of the gears. It wont right now. It will just walk right off when I have the tensioner set.

I have heard the cam pulleys can develope a taper that will walk the belt off.If I remember correctly it was on the dohc vct motor.
