Ford EscortFord Escort ZX2 is a hot-looking compact coupe with a rakish design. Yet its handsome interior reveals a roomy back seat and surprisingly large trunk. ZX2 provides responsive handling and good road manners and its engine delivers decent power. At the same time, the ZX2 is a practical car, with plenty of room in the back seats for friends.
I have a 99 Escort wagon with an intermittent problem. Engine runs rough, but this state of affairs comes and goes. I have replaced fuel filter, plugs, plug wires and coil, but problem persists. It's okay under acceleration but runs rough while cruising or idling. Sometimes it will run rough at one speed and fine at another speed. My mechanic doesn't have a clue.
Do a compression test. These engines are known for dropping valve seats. It's usually one of the seats for #4 cylinder. I think usually the exhaust valve seat. I've heard many people say loss of power is how it usually starts. Check it soon though because if that's the problem it will probably soon fall completely out doing head and possibly piston and block damage.
My mechanic already ruled out catalytic converter (not that I put 100 percent faith in him). But the other idea sounded intriguing. I will ask my mechanic to do a compression test.
I would think a valve seat would be constant not an intermittant problem but is worth checkin..Did he get any engine codes ?b I have had problems with the MAF sensor in the past where a piece of the air filter floats around and blocks the sensors port at times,

Like I mentioned in my other post
I have a 94 escort with a 1.9L engine and I had a similar problem and did a lot of research on this to save a few bucks. The problem with my car was the idle air control valve. The idle control valve is used for controlling air flow when not adding gas, something to make the car burn less gas. After thousands of miles that valve can get sticky. Some can be cleaned, mine had to be replaced. It was around 50 bucks. Now it runs smoothly hardly can hear the engine. If that is replaced and still you have problems than make sure that the egr valve is cleaned.

The problem with the valve seat is intemittant at first, because it is just loose and seats properly part of the time, but it becomes a serious problem when it eventually turns loose. Let us know whether this is the problem or not. Hopefully not!!
Well, the rough-running problem flared up again last week, so I took car to my mechanic Monday morning. He found a bad injector. Replaced it Tuesday, and the engine runs fine now.
Mechanic said it is rare to have an injector with an intermittent problem, which, I guess, is why it didn't occur to him before.
