Ford Escort Ford Escort ZX2 is a hot-looking compact coupe with a rakish design. Yet its handsome interior reveals a roomy back seat and surprisingly large trunk. ZX2 provides responsive handling and good road manners and its engine delivers decent power. At the same time, the ZX2 is a practical car, with plenty of room in the back seats for friends.

Default 99 Escort 2-speed radiator cooling fan

My Escort is not equipped with A/C and has a manual transmission.
I never hear the fan come on.
When idling in slow traffic, the temp gauge starts climbing past the middle mark.

Is it supposed to have a 2 speed fan ?

I disconnected the fans 3-pin connector.
Then I applied +12 V by first disconnecting the battery.

Pins

A- fan -hi
B- fan -lo
C- ground

By jumpering pin B to +12V, nothing happens.
Pin A gives max fan speed.

Using the ohm-meter, the resistance is as follows:

A-B open circuit
A-C ~ 1 ohm

Where should I look next ?

Thanks!
Holly

Good job! Since the A-C circuit works, check resistance from A to B. IF it isn't nearly the same... time for a new fan.

I thought since I don't have A/C and its a manual trans., perhaps the fan is only supposed to be 1 speed ?

The lo-speed fan I believe has a dropping resistor in it according to the schematic.
Maybe it open-circuited.

No I am sure it is a two speed fan. What you were doing with your multimeter was checking the FAN itself, but you stopped short of checking the low speed fan circuit.

IF It is good, then the next thing would be to back track through the circuit. Included in that would be the resistor in the diagram. Also fuses, and the low speed relay (I assume that there is one, but I have not refferenced a diagram.)

You are right-o BroncoJoe. It is a 2 speed fan controlled by CCRM. No dropping resistor on this car!

Many thanks Doc, Joe :-)
I may have looked at the wrong diagram. Perhaps the Contour/Mistake.

I plan to remove the fan and have a closer look.
If the full-speed is working (I assume the full coil mode), than maybe there is a break in the connection to the half -coil mode.
I'll take almost anything apart to see how it works
