Ford Escort Ford Escort ZX2 is a hot-looking compact coupe with a rakish design. Yet its handsome interior reveals a roomy back seat and surprisingly large trunk. ZX2 provides responsive handling and good road manners and its engine delivers decent power. At the same time, the ZX2 is a practical car, with plenty of room in the back seats for friends.

How good are the differentials in the ford escorts? Are they pretty durable? Any common problems?

If you put a LOT of HP to them the case flexes and the teeth start to chip.

(I sat down the row from the folks trying to beef up the 5 speed manual to work with the original SHO !)

The diff is a two spider open diff. I've broken two on stock power, even with easy launches on a stock clutch.

Default escort diff

I've got a 1995 Escort LX (1.9L) 5-speed, just did some transaxle work (see picture) this gen Escort has many parts interchangeable w/Mazdas and Kias. My unit is an F25M-R, made or designed (?) by Mazda. There's how-to's out there on replacing the stock diff w/a Mazdaspeed LSD unit.
