Ford EscortFord Escort ZX2 is a hot-looking compact coupe with a rakish design. Yet its handsome interior reveals a roomy back seat and surprisingly large trunk. ZX2 provides responsive handling and good road manners and its engine delivers decent power. At the same time, the ZX2 is a practical car, with plenty of room in the back seats for friends.
I am about to undertake replacing the suspension system in my escort and just need to figure out if it's struts or shocks I need to be price hunting for. Any help is appreciated.
Bouncy-bouncy then it it's struts a.k.a. dampeners.
Slam-bam then it's shocks a.k.a. springs. (or strut mounts in some cases)
If replacing the springs then you may as well replace the struts.
You really should closely inspect all of your springs before deciding not to replace them. If any of the protective coating is missing then they may be fast deteriorating or already be broken. Also look for any "notches" in the coil springs.
Buy Monroe Quick Struts. These come with the strut, new springs and strut bearings and completely assembled. I just put a pair of these on a 1998 Buick Century and it rides like a new car.
