Ford Escort Ford Escort ZX2 is a hot-looking compact coupe with a rakish design. Yet its handsome interior reveals a roomy back seat and surprisingly large trunk. ZX2 provides responsive handling and good road manners and its engine delivers decent power. At the same time, the ZX2 is a practical car, with plenty of room in the back seats for friends.

Default Changing Platinum Spark Plugs

Hello,

New to the forum. Looking for a little help. I have a 98 Escort Wagon with 87,000 miles. It is recommended to change the plugs at 105,000 miles. With gasoline prices so high, I wondered if my mileage might improve by changing the plugs, wires and fuel filter? I already put a K&N air filter. Any other ideas to improve gas mileage ? Thanks in advance for the help.

Joe

Replace your O2 sensors if they are originals.

Put on a lower restriction exhaust system.

I doubt you'd make the money back. I think most of these products are manufacturers trying to create a reason for consumers to buy higher priced items.

run an injector cleaner.

make sure you are running a good oil, so everything is lubricated.

change the filters when needed.

change the wires if they are old.

OEM plugs are OEM 'cause they work real well.

No need to change plugs till 100k. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I don't like breakdowns alongside the road so at 100k on any vehicle with a timing belt like the Escort i do the following. Replace all belts including the timing belt, plugs, filters, drain and flush brake system then filling with new fluid, examine hoses and replace any that are bulged or cracking. Check spark plug wires for breakdown and if faulty replace them. That is about it. By doing this I have never worn out an engine and end up selling my vehicles cause I get tired of them. My current 98 Escort has 146k and runs like a top. Oh, after breakin I use Mobil one synthetic motor oil which helps gaurd against oil breakdown and sludge build up among other things. Change oil with mobil one at the longer service interval for light duty useage.
