Default 2002 Escort Fuel problem?

Okay went to go to parents who live 50 miles away. Get out on the highway and start to notice a chug/spurt then it was fine. Then couple minutes later same thing. Then the car started losing acceleration and chugging as if it was going to die. It didnt die, then the check engine light came on, but was chugging really bad, so i pulled over and stopped. I checked the air filter, it wasnt dirty. Oil was good. Gas had 1/4 of a tank of gas. So i started it up again and let it run for minute and then it cleared up and drove back home since we were only 20 miles along. Didnt want to risk going any further and not being able to drive back.

Any help to what it was? Bad gas, Maybe change fuel filter? I dont know. Any help would be appreciated?

First thing that entered my mind was fuel filter or maybe adding a can of gas line antifreeze (Heet) if in winter area. Might have been a little water in fuel and gas line antifreeze would help that.
