it seems to be coming from the back of the car somewhere, however theres no sign of any fuel dripping anywhere, no puddles etc, and performance seems unaffected.

did you find out what this was? I have a ford festiva and if i leave a shirt on the back seat it smells of fuel. I've check my fuel tank and the lines, tank and seals and nothing is wrong there. I think it may come from my air con. I'm at a loss to work out what is going on.
