| Had a problem in a lot older truck actually my 69 truck. However, i managed to fix the problem by replacing the hole steering shaft, something was loose in the shaft causing the problem. Bow 40 years later is a totally different setup, but as my grand pappy always said, if you don't know where to start go back to the beginning.

| The rag joints in the steering shafts were prone to being bad in 69-72 Ford trucks. The front cab mounts rotted out on most models placing large amounts of stress on the steering columns. Column shifters also fell prone to the stress.

| AKTRADERS:
Sorry about all the responses NOT pertaining to the vehicle in question - 60's and 70's Ford trucks bear about as much mechanical resemblance to modern Superduty trucks as to a DeTomaso Pantera. My experience with the recent Superduty, specifically with my own 2001 Excursion, suggests that you may want to have your ball joints checked. I had a wandering issue that became very pronounced the week before last when I hitched a 40-foot travel trailer to Big Black and proceeded to drive 900 white-knuckle miles from Hamilton, OH to Sulphur Springs, TX, where I had a mechanic friend replace the driver side upper ball joint, which had failed; the result was a remarkable improvement in handling and steering authority, and a much more relaxed remaining 300 miles of our trip. The spent joint didn't have a great deal of movement in it, but the small amount of play gave rise to an unpleasant amount of hunting for direction on the highway.
Have your ball joints checked, as well as the tie rods; big things like steering racks and power steering pumps are less likely to be the culprit, but can be considered after eliminating the usual suspects.

| dieseldave, he had said already that he had changed the ball joints, steering box and tires.
An 01 excursion will not have a steering rack also.

| Wander is a problem that ive found hard to diagnose and for everyone to agree, if for really has replaced all the components they claim to have, then my question is does it have a stabilizer? if it does replace it, if it doesnt it needs one, i know these vehicles are nice but they are still heavy trucks and may not steer as nicely as a car, so that should be taken into consideration, but it should drive in a manner that the average driver should be able to maintain it |

| I have a 2005 gas 2wd that I bought NEW, 6 months ago. The thing sounds just like yours. I love it, my poor wife hates it. After research, I have bought a set of leading-arms / "radius-Rods" that sound like they are the right way to go. They're still in the post but I'm confident they will work when I get them fitted.
Will post the outcome.
Cheers
