Ford ExcursionIn terms of size, the Ford Excursion is the king of big sport-utilities. Supremely stable at speed, it feels safe and secure on the open highway. Whether you have a lot of cargo to carry, a bunch of people to transport, a big trailer to pull, or all of the above, the Excursion is ready for whatever you throw its way. It can tow up to 11,000 pounds and seat 8-9.
I have a 2002 Excursion V10 w/ 90,000 miles. I have replaced the rotors every 30,000 miles. I want to replace the tires with larger than the OEMs which are 16in. I also want better brakes! Any suggestions would be welcomed.
The only thing I have pulled is 6 kids, a dog, and my hair out because I have to replace the brakes so often. The 90K miles are 50/50 city vs highway. Everything I have read says that putting bigger tires on will improve the ride (which is already fine with me) and help the braking.
I've had brake pulsation since the truck was new. At 64k this will be my third brake job. Calipers and rotors have been replaced twice under warranty. I am going to try cryogenic treated rotors with Akebono pads. We'll see how that turns out. For tires I used Michelin LTX M/S Load range E. They ride nice!

I've just replaced all brake rotors and pads as well as tires and wheels. Powerslot rotors with HAWK HPS pads. 305/70R16 Firestone Destination AT's on EVO by Weld Commando wheels. All this made a night and day difference in ride quality and braking ability.
I have an 01 Limited with the V8 and 107,000 miles. I drive about 90% highway driving and 10% suburbs. I perform all of my own maintenance and check the brakes regularly. I just recently inspected my rotors and pads and they still look almost new. I don't know if 50% city driving can make that much of a difference. Do you drive aggressively and brake hard or do you drive defensively and anticipate stops ahead of time? Driving style has a lot to do with gas mileage, tire wear, brake wear and overall vehicle condition. I hope you find a solution to your problem.
