Ford ExpThe EXP's body rode on the Escort's 94.2 inch wheelbase, with that car's front-wheel drive running gear, four-wheel independent suspension, and dashboard. The EXP was longer, lower, and sportier than the Escort. Performance wasn't the cars strong suit. The EXP weighed about 200 pounds more than Escort but carried the same 1.6 L CVH I4 engine rated at 70 hp.

It was an Escort based 2 door hatch. It stood for Erica X Project. It was supposed to be Ford's econo sport, but it wasn't very fast at first. Later it had a turbo 1.6, and eventually got the 1.9. Sales weren't that great, so it only went until 88 or 89, and by then it was called the Escort EXP. It wasn't a hugely popular car, but it was a fun one to drive...pretty much the same as a '81-'90 Escort. I like 'em. But it's somewhat humorous, if not annoying, that an Explorer is called an EXP.

The engines are capable of more than what most people would think. I've seen a dyno readout of a 1.6 CVH in the UK (same engine as the US has) that was making ~334 horsepower. I would say that would be sufficient to scare the bejeezus out of someone. Plus, with a bit of ingenuity, they would make a nice rear drive car, and it has been done.
The EXP,s are definatly a 1 of a kind vehicle you have to drive 1 to know how much fun they are and they are getting SO rare .. alot of people cant figure out what it is lol..Plus the EXP,s are even better on the road than it,s counterpart the Escort.. Modified suspention from factory makes it 1of a kind
I like how they were considered a Sports car just cause they had no back seat. Nothing like paying higher insurance for an Escort.
However I always thought of them as like a mini Mustang with all of the balls removed, cool looking but barely had enough power to get out of its own way.
I always wanted one when they first came out, I wouldnt mind having one now just to beat on.
