Ford Expedition True expeditions require additional transportation conveyances: horses, boats, cars, for example. With a towing capacity around 9,000 pounds, the Ford Expedition can tow any of these. Ford adds a new top end King Ranch model for 2008, as well as an available rear backup camera and power-retractable running boards. The Expedition is meant for utility, not posing.

One would think that there is a plug, but there is not.
One must drop the pan to get the oil out.
I've never done it before but plan to do so soon. I believe that there is a plug in the torque converter (and it holds most of the trans fluid)

Pull the dipstick. Is it dark red or brown and/or does it smell burnt ? If any of these are true, then yes your is burnt. I'm not certain if changing it will help. Usually by this time it is too late and damage has already been done.

Brand (Mobil, Shell, Motorcraft) does not matter. Just make certain the bottle says Mercon V

Torque converter is attached to the flywheel directly behind the engine and is covered by the transmission bellhousing.

The copper colored thing is the torque converter.

Here are a few more photos.
Trans mission with torque converter removed.

Transmission with torque converter attached to it.

Here is a torque converter attached to the flywheel, notice the teeth around it.

Another view.

Mark,
Thanks for the pictures. Looking at those, it is pretty obvious that one can't access the torque converter by dropping the pan. How does one change the fluid in the torque converter?
Is that usually done?

I recommend adding a trans pan drain plug before you reinstall & refill it. I bought one from Summit Racing years ago, it is really handy to have.

As far as draining the T/Converter, usually you can put the E-brake on, place the tranny in neutral, & use a standard screw driver to "turn" the flywheel assembly (leveraging off the teeth) until you see the drain plug on the bottom of the converter.

Fortunately not all torque converters have drain plugs on them. For a full flush of the system you can get a power flush from one of them quick oil change places. However make sure you watch them hook up the lines cause there have been several reports through out the years where they scam people on this job.

If you do go and have it "power flushed" somewhere. Check the trans fluid reading on a level surface when you arrive home. This will ensure they filled the fluid to the proper level & didn't over fill the fluid as well.
